The LAS Summer Academic Program consists of two streams. The first, our “Accelerator” program, provides a clear focus on core school subjects. The second, our “Explorer” program, allows students to discover a range of fascinating topics that support the development of key skills in particularly alternative subjects. Both programs bring the classroom out into the real world in order to take what the students have learned and apply them to practical situations. Students will select two courses from any of the subjects offered.

Mathematics

Mathematics is prevalent in most every aspect of our lives. Math theories, concepts, and principles are the foundation of the economy, time, measurements, engineering, and even the arts. For this reason, it is clear that students need to have a solid working knowledge of mathematics. This course is designed to strengthen students’ math comprehension. Not only will it expose students to the way math is used in science, technology, and engineering, it will also help students understand statistics, practice reasoning skills, and strengthen their critical thinking.

Computer Programming

Alice is an object-based educational programming language that uses a “drag and drop” environment to create computer animations using 3D models. Students will create a variety of animations in this class as they explore programming basics. Over the course of the session, students will have an opportunity to create, develop, and program their own animations.

Behavioral Economics

Do you understand the economic topics discussed in the news? Do you believe that “experts” can predict what you will like and how you will spend your money?

Economics is a fascinating social science that helps us understand why we make the choices we make. It is the science that explores who we are as individuals and groups and it helps us understand the risks and rewards of the choices we make.

Global Leadership

What does it take to be a great leader? Are those traits the same today as they were 20, 50, 100, or 1,000 years ago? In this class, students will discover characteristics and challenges of leadership in our world. This is an interactive class in which students become familiar with high profile leaders involved in current conflicts and negotiations, as well as identify, develop, and exercise their own leadership skills.

Code Cracking

Cryptography is the science of secret communication. No only has it been around for hundreds of years, it is the science on which the internet is built. In this class you will study the different techniques used to encrypt and decrypt data and the importance of binary in security systems. How have encryption techniques changes throughout the years? Are there any sound ways to decrypt messages?

Robotics

Will robots take over the world someday? Before that can happen robots need to be programed and as long as we have experienced programmers in the world we should be safe. In this class students will learn the behind-the-scenes coding techniques to program and control robots. No experience is necessary.

Unsolved Mysteries

Why do things disappear in the Bermuda Triangle? What actually happened to the inhabitants of Easter Island? Why did the Mayan Empire fall? Witches, werewolves, ghosts, vampires: do they really exist, and if so, where do they come from?

In this class you will investigate some of the great mysteries and unsolved mysteries throughout history.

The Art of Science

The Art of Science is a science class that integrates the arts as a way to enhance comprehension of scientific concepts. Throughout the course students will utilize the skills, processes, and behaviors involved in the arts that are also critical to science. Integrating art and science into hands on activities will allow students to understand concepts that may be difficult to comprehend especially when traditional rote memorization was expected.
