Summers on the Magic Mountain

Summer on the Magic Mountain is truly breathtaking with its endless lush green hills, crisp mountain air, and sun-drenched days. Sadly, it’s also the one time of year at LAS that most of our students don’t get to experience.

Have you ever experienced Leysin in the summer? What was it like for you? What did you do? If you didn't spend your summers in Leysin, how did you usually spend that time? Were you unwinding at home, visiting a roommate in an exciting part of the world, or counting down the days until you could return? We’d love to hear your summer stories, wherever they took you!

Mary Lou DeVore Hery:

"I was going through photo albums from 1970's and found this picture from a summer stay with the foreign study league. Kids from all over the US were on our trip. We stayed and were taught here in the summer."

"I went back to Leysin the first summer after I graduated in 1971, in 1972, after concluding a summer job in Germany. I stayed at the Club Vagabond which was fun but not many people there that time of year. I recall how the meadows around Leysin were dense with grass and flowers and there were a lot of bees, and also summer thundershowers. Overall, the town was much quieter than I remembered from the school year, and the school was closed. Sadly, I didn't take a lot of photos while at LAS, but I found this one recently of me and a cousin from Texas looking out from Eagle's Nest (Nid d'Aigle) on a hazy day toward Lac Leman, taken in June 1970.  Wish it had been clearer.  I'm sure y'all remember hiking out to this point at the end of the trail and road from our school.  If anyone has a better photo of the view, that would be great to post it here."
