Reliving the LAS Experience: Alumni Kids at Summer in Switzerland

Not only does LAS continue to offer an exceptional education during the academic year—every summer students come together from around the world to fill our beloved Alpine campus with energy, laughter, and excitement for the “Summer of a Lifetime.” Summer students are immersed in the same vibrant blend of learning, adventure, creativity, and friendship that we all have experienced on the spectacular Magic Mountain.

Each summer, we welcome more and more of our LAS Global Family members back to campus—this time with their kids (or grandkids!) in tow! Family bonds are strengthened thanks to shared LAS experiences such as hiking the same mountains, eating in the same dining halls, sleeping in the same dorms, and waking up to the same majestic mountain views (and cowbells!). We are so excited to see a growing number of LAS alumni enroll their kids in the Summer in Switzerland program to experience the same magic that they remember from their time on the mountain.

This year, Christine Taylor ‘94 brought her two children to SIS and loves that now she and her kids “share Leysin” together. Even the small charms of life at LAS, like taking a scenic walk from Lower Sporting to the Savoy cafeteria and being greeted by a tasty barbecue spare rib dinner, are a point of connection—Christine’s son described this as “a peak experience.” Christine was amused when her daughter said that walking to the Coop from campus was “just too far.” We’ve all been there! Christine says that having this Leysin connection with her kids has meant so much.

Megan (Dickenson) Warren ‘98 has been teaching art at Summer in Switzerland for the past two summers and loves bringing her two children along. “Coming to SIS has been huge for my kids and they’ve had an amazing time. They’ve met people from different cultures, developed independence, learned how to live in a dorm, and how to work around language barriers. They went parapenting for the first time, did ropes courses, hiked, went to a glacier, ice skated, and even woke up to cowbells! They now have so many joyful and adventurous memories and I am so proud that I was able to offer them the experience of being in Leysin. I want to plant the seed that Leysin is like a home for them too.”
