From LEGO Stop-Motion to Hollywood: The Visual Effects Journey of Kenny Clark ‘13

In the world of cinema, there's a team of incredible professionals who work behind the scenes on our favorite movies. One of these professionals is Kenny Clark, an LAS alum who has made an impressive career as an FX Technical Director at Framestore, a leading visual effects studio. Kenny's journey, from a childhood love of LEGO stop-motion films to creating breathtaking visual effects for blockbusters like Disney's The Little Mermaid and Netflix's Heart of Stone, shows his passion, dedication, and commitment to storytelling through technology.

Kenny's interest in visual effects first started in his middle school days at LAS, where he entered the world of stop-motion films using LEGO bricks. This early interest laid the foundation for an amazing career in the visual effects industry. At LAS, Kenny remembers working on his digital media skills with mentors like Mr. Padick. A memorable project involved creating action-packed sequences with muzzle flares, blood puffs, and tracers, offering a glimpse into what visual effects can add to cinematic storytelling.

Following his LAS education, Kenny pursued an Information Technology degree at the University of Missouri (USA). Initially film was a hobby, but an important moment came when he enrolled in an elective computer science course on 3D modeling and animation. This ignited Kenny's passion for visual effects, and he knew he had found a career he wanted to go into.

In 2017, armed with a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology, Kenny took a step towards his dream career. He attended a visual effects finishing school in 2018, learning essential skills for his career journey. Then Kenny secured a position at Moving Picture Company in Montreal. His career journey has spanned Montreal, Los Angeles, and now Vancouver, reflecting the global nature of the visual effects industry and an LAS education.

In 2016, Kenny had the privilege of instructing a 3D Modeling class at the LAS Summer program, an experience that left an impact on both the students and Kenny himself. Kenny is committed to helping others learn about the visual effects world, and his unique career mixes artistic expression with cutting-edge technology. Visual effects are essential in the film industry as they form the basis for movies like Star Wars and the Marvel franchise. Kenny aims to inspire artistically inclined students interested in technology, cameras, and film to explore this field. He now works at Industrial Light & Magic, which has worked on projects such as Killers of the Flower Moon, Wicked, Transformers, Napoleon, The Mandalorian, and much more!

Kenny's journey from LEGO stop-motion films to Hollywood productions highlights the power of pursuing one's passion. His dedication to visual effects inspires students and budding artists, demonstrating that determination and a love for storytelling can lead to an incredible career!
