Videography and Music Students Enhance Their Skills Through Podcast Production
This semester, our Videography and Music Composition & Performance classes embarked on an exciting journey into the world of podcasting. While both classes explored the basics of high-quality audio production, each took a different approach. We love providing students with experiential learning opportunities in the classroom, and they really enjoyed getting their hands on state-of-the-art equipment!
Podcasting has experienced huge growth in recent years, becoming one of the most accessible and influential media formats. Whether for storytelling, education, or entertainment, podcasts have become an important way of communicating with audiences. To ensure our students could effectively use with this technology, they were introduced to professional recording techniques using audio interfaces and condenser microphones—tools that improve the quality of production.
In the Videography class, students created video podcasts, requiring them to master both visual and audio storytelling. This involved recording video and audio separately and then aligning them in post-production while incorporating titles and graphics. Combining visual and audio elements was a real challenge, but our students loved exploring this new medium and creating something that represents all their hard work and research!
Given that LAS is an ECO School, sustainability plays a role in a significant portion of our academics. This year’s focus is Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), emphasizing the importance of clean water and sanitation for all. In their podcasts, students explored water availability and cleanliness in their home countries. They discussed the school’s efforts to reduce plastic waste, including installing new water fountains around campus. Through this project, students developed their technical skills and engaged in global conversations.
The Music Composition & Performance students took a different approach, focusing on audio-only podcasts with topics of their choosing. Aside from recording dialogue, they also composed original music for their podcasts, crafting intro, transition, and outro themes. This blend of technical and creative skills highlighted the importance of sound design in creating an immersive listening experience.
This podcasting project was all about innovation, collaboration, and hands-on experience. Students developed technical skills by working on real-world projects while researching global issues. They learned a lot, had loads of fun, and gained confidence in this hugely popular medium for communicating ideas. We’re excited to see where their podcasting skills take them next!
