Building Meaningful Connections at LAS: The Big Program Kicks Off with Community and Cheer

At Leysin American School, community is at the foundation of our education and it's something that we build with great care. One of the most meaningful ways we do this is through the Big Program, a mentoring initiative that pairs older students with our Grade 7, 8, and 9 "Littles." These student mentors, known as “Bigs,” act as supportive older siblings throughout the year, helping younger students feel welcomed, supported, and connected as they navigate life at LAS.

Our Bigs take their role to heart. They check in with their Littles throughout the year, stay available by phone or email when guidance is needed, and model positivity, leadership, and kindness in every interaction. Whether it’s sharing a meal in the cafeteria, catching a bubble tea in town, organizing a study session, or heading off the mountain together during the weekend, Bigs create moments that help their Littles settle in, grow confident, and feel part of something bigger. They also come together for group activities that strengthen the network of friendships forming across grades.

To kick off this year’s program, students gathered for a festive a pizza-making night where G7–9 students met their Bigs for the first time and spent some quality time together. Students rolled dough,  layered toppings, and laughed as they crafted their own tasty masterpieces. Some even got creative with Nutella pizzas! Our Esplanade Dorm Head (Mr. P) managed the outdoor oven, and many students loved taking a turn at sliding their pizzas in and watching them transform in the heat. The evening also featured a fun quiz that teams completed together, followed by a cozy movie night.  The room buzzed with energy as new pairs were formed, conversations sparked, and the first bonds of mentorship began to take shape.

Here is what our student "Bigs" had to say about the Big Program:

Alina '28: "It's a meaningful time that we get to spend time with younger kids and share our experiences."

Koharu '27: "I liked the opportunities to get to know the people from the younger grades, especially from different dorms. I also like the idea of the program because it helps my Little to get a bit of perspective from other grades and dorms, particularly academic life."

Anushka '26" "I really enjoyed the activities set up by the teachers, and it allowed me to comfortably have fun with my littles without it being too overwhelming for either of us. There's an event every month, and I find it worthwhile to connect with student from other grades without being stressed about what to do together."

Dramane '26: "It was nice to see younger peers that you don't get to see often. I would just say being a Big is surprisingly like going to a family gathering with cousins you don't talk to a lot; you might think its boring at first but then it's surprisingly fun. It's nice that someone sees you as a brotherly figure."

With more events planned throughout the year, the Big Program continues to enrich our school culture—helping Littles feel supported and helping Bigs develop leadership, empathy, and responsibility. It’s yet another way LAS ensures every student feels seen, connected, and truly at home.
