Recently, our students brought sustainability to life during Sustainability Alive, a full day dedicated to the Collaborative Sciences Project! Working in teams, students tackled real-world global challenges through interactive labs, problem-solving games, and hands-on workshops focused on issues such as climate change, poverty, and unequal access to resources. Experiences like these are central to the LAS education, which focuses on tackling real world problems through the lenses of global citizenship, compassion, responsibility, and innovation.

Collaborating across biology, chemistry, physics, IB Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS), sports and health science, and computer science, students explored how to reimagine a more sustainable world. This interdisciplinary approach allows students to see firsthand how combining insights and methods from multiple fields fuels innovative solutions to interconnected challenges like climate change, public health, and sustainable resource management.

The day encouraged students to combine their scientific knowledge with creativity, empathy, and critical thinking to develop practical, meaningful solutions to today’s global issues. They built water purifiers from recycled materials, analyzed environmental systems, and reflected on how they can contribute to a more equitable, environmentally responsible future.

Beyond science, Sustainability Alive also strengthened teamwork, communication, and collaboration. Students learned the power of diverse perspectives, and how combining ideas and working together can lead to innovative solutions.

Here is what students had to say about participating in Sustainability Alive:

“This experience helped me see the world from new perspectives and understand how small consequences for some can mean so much more for others.”

“I learned about the harsh realities many people face and how inequality affects every aspect of life. It made me reflect on privilege and how we can all make change.”

“Working together was challenging but rewarding. The activities opened my eyes to global problems and inspired me to think creatively about sustainable solutions.”

Besides fulfilling the new IB Collaborative Sciences Project criteria, this inspiring event also showcased the power of science, creativity, and collaboration to drive positive change. Sustainability Alive reminded us all that when young minds come together with purpose and passion, a more sustainable future is truly possible!
