Students Summit the Dents du Midi as Part of their International Award Journey

Resilience, adaptability, creativity, problem-solving, decision-making, and communication are just some of the invaluable skills our students develop while immersed in the stunning Alpine environment at Leysin American School in Switzerland. These qualities are also at the heart of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, a prestigious multi-level program (with Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards) that empowers students to demonstrate dedication, perseverance, and commitment. Each level of the award includes five key components: community service, skills development, physical fitness, the "Adventurous Journey," and the "Gold Project."

This past weekend, nine students—Thomas '27, Mary '27, Natalia '27, Isla '28, Anna Claire '28, Viola '29, Michelle '28, Jacob '27 and Elly '28—completed the Adventurous Journey component of the Gold Award and summited the iconic Dents du Midi (3257m). The highest and most challenging level, the Gold Award pushes students to their limits and beyond, with the Adventurous Journey serving as a true test of their resilience, teamwork, and independence. This group has been working together for a number of years to prepare to summit this peak and we applaud their hard work in planning the route, preparing the maps, organizing their equipment and in summiting this local test piece as a team.

Over the years, students and staff alike have taken on the challenge of summiting the Dents du Midi. As the mountain peak that sits most prominently in the view from campus, hiking the Dents du Midi is a highlight for those who have made the journey and is a memory that alumni often share with us.

This expedition, with the thousands of meters climbed, awe-inspiring views, perfect weather, flawless teamwork, and hearty laughter, was a truly unforgettable adventure. We could not be more proud of these nine outstanding students. Their journey is not only a major milestone in earning the Gold Award but also a profound step in their growth as resilient, brave, and growth-minded individuals.
