Spring Semester at LAS: Adventure, Achievement, and Celebration

Spring is not only a beautiful time of year on the mountain but also a chance for our community to finish the academic year strong, celebrate milestones, and have a little fun along the way!

Abundant Options for Fun and Personal Development

One of the things that makes LAS so special is the breadth of what students can pursue outside the classroom. The Spring Activities program provides learning and growth opportunities in athletics, creativity, wellness, and leadership, ensuring there is genuinely something for everyone.

On the sporting front, students can choose from football, volleyball, badminton, cross-country, basketball, tennis, golf, and climbing and bouldering. This spring also sees the exciting addition of two brand-new options: lacrosse and pétanque. The maker space, painting, pottery, rock school, and school newspaper activities offer rich outlets for creativity and self-expression.

Fitness and wellness are equally well represented, with jiu-jitsu and judo, yoga, Pilates, workout classes, strength and conditioning, hiking, outdoor adventure, ice skating, girls' self-defense, and the Wellness and Gratitude Lab all on offer.

Students looking to sharpen their minds outside of class can join speech and debate, science olympiad, or book club, while those seeking leadership and community roles will find a home in Model United Nations, student council, the entrepreneur club, community service, or SAFE.

Tradition, Celebration, and Milestone Moments

Prom brings the community together in a spirit of delightful celebration right after spring break! Students dress up in their finest, gather with dear friends, and mark the end of the year in true festive fashion. The junior prom will take place in the elegant SHMS ballroom, and the senior prom will be in the beautiful 12th century Château d'Aigle. These gorgeous, magical spaces are decorated according to student-created themes, and there is an abundance of festive food, and lively dance music. It’s an evening of making memories that will last long after graduation.

Closer to the end of the year, there are a series of events that have become cherished parts of the school calendar. The Underclass Awards celebrate the achievements of G7-11 students, recognizing leadership in academics and residential life community.

The Senior Awards Banquet and Alumni Induction Ceremony is one of the most meaningful evenings of the year. This event honors G12 students as they prepare to leave LAS and step into the next chapter of their lives, and formally welcomes them into the LAS alumni community. It’s a rite of passage that connects them to generations of graduates who have walked the same halls, and gazed at the same majestic views. Awards for outstanding alumni, special LAS awards, and athletic, and dorm awards are presented, and the valedictorian and salutatorian are announced. It’s an evening of heartfelt expression and warm celebration.

And then there is Graduation. The culmination of years of hard work, growth, and friendship, graduation is a day of immense pride for students, families, and the entire LAS community. Moving speeches by the valedictorian, a student-elected faculty speaker, and an invited guest speaker all contribute to the nostalgia, joy, and sense of gratitude that define this event.

Travel and Cultural Immersion Throughout Europe

Perhaps one of the most eagerly awaited traditions of the spring semester is the Spring Culturals program. Grouped by grade level, students head out across Europe for immersive, enriching experiences that bring history, culture, language, and geography to life in ways no classroom ever could.

This year's destinations are nothing short of spectacular: Provence (France)—with its lavender fields, medieval villages, and sun-drenched countryside; Cinque Terre (Italy)—the breathtaking string of cliffside Italian villages; Puglia and Sicily (Italy)—the sun-soaked southern reaches of Italy, rich in ancient history and incredible food; Madeira Island (Portugal)—Portugal's lush Atlantic jewel; Malta—a tiny island nation with thousands of years of layered civilization; Croatia—with its dramatic coastline and walled medieval cities; and surfing in Portugal—where students trade mountain views for Atlantic waves.

These trips are more than just travel. They are an extension of the LAS education—building independence, broadening perspectives, and creating the kind of shared memories that define the school experience.

Spring semester is a remarkable time to be part of the LAS community. From the first warm days on campus to the final farewell of graduation, it is a season full of growth, celebration, and the kind of adventure that only life in the stunning Swiss Alps—and LAS—can offer!
