The LAS Alpine Institute is a unique program that allows students to immerse themselves in the breathtaking natural beauty of Switzerland. Surrounded by the Alps, our school goes beyond classroom learning, providing students with hands-on outdoor education opportunities after school and on weekends. This program encourages them to explore the stunning Alpine environment while fostering interests in sustainability, global citizenship, and climate action.
One of the most challenging and rewarding experiences offered through the LAS Alpine Institute is the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award. This prestigious, multi-level award allows students to develop their dedication, resilience, and commitment. The Gold level International Award is the most challenging level of this program, requiring years of preparation and effort.
Last week, four students embarked on a four-day expedition as part of their gold level. Covering 44 kilometers, with an elevation gain of 4000 meters up and down, the journey involved over 25 hours of hiking through various weather conditions, including rain, fog, wind, and sunshine. This hike was not only a test of their physical endurance but also of their navigation skills and ability to work as a team in preparing food and camping in challenging conditions.
The students undertaking this challenge included Isaiah ‘26, Xander ‘25, William ‘25, and Tasker ‘26. Each student has been working toward completing their Gold level, a huge achievement that they should be so proud of! It’s important to note that at least four students must complete the trip together to qualify as part of their award, highlighting the collaboration needed for this challenge.
These students, through the LAS Alpine Institute and the International Award program, are not just learning outdoor skills but are also developing into well-rounded, environmentally conscious individuals. The LAS Alpine Institute believes that nature is not just something to admire from a distance but a living classroom where students can grow physically and mentally. By participating in outdoor adventures and challenges, students step out of their comfort zones, learning essential life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and self-reliance along the way. These outdoor pursuits help students develop a deeper connection with the natural world in the hopes they will now and, in the future, be committed to making a positive impact on our planet.
