November at LAS has brought more than just autumn leaves and upcoming ski season excitement—it brought an important cause to light: Movember! This global movement raises awareness about men’s mental health, suicide prevention, and testicular cancer, encouraging not only men but everyone to talk about men’s health. A blend of the words “mustache” and “November,” this movement has encouraged discussions in our community and, of course, lots of fantastic mustaches!
Throughout the month, LAS faculty have promoted this cause in creative and thought-provoking ways:
- Mustache Growing: Several faculty members embraced the Movember spirit by growing mustaches, sparking curiosity, and opening discussions about men’s health with students.
- Weekly Health Discussions: Faculty members Mr. Curson and Mr. Cosgrove led informative sessions in Savoy, covering topics like early detection of testicular cancer and the importance of mental health awareness. These sessions encouraged open conversations and educated both male and female students on supporting themselves and the men in their lives.
- Displays: A display in Savoy will showcase teachers’ mustache-growing journeys, showing a visual reminder of the month’s important message!
Movember isn’t just for people who can grow a mustache. Students and faculty wore mustache badges, engaged in discussions, and supported each other in learning about these crucial topics. By normalizing these conversations, the LAS community is working to dismantle the stigma surrounding men’s health and mental well-being. Coupled with Kindness Week last week, we have had a really impactful November, where students have learned about the importance of learning about themselves and others in addition to their academics and social education.
We are really proud of how our students have engaged in meaningful discussions and learned valuable health lessons this month that affect many people worldwide. For more information about Movember and how you can continue the conversation at home, visit the Movember website. Together, we’re growing more than mustaches—we’re growing awareness, empathy, and support for each other!
