LAS University Advising: Transforming LAS Grade 9 and 10 Futures
At LAS, we provide a world-class university advising program with ample support and guidance for students preparing for life after high school. Our university advising team starts working with students early in their time at LAS so that students feel confident in their choices and prepared to enter the universities and courses of their choosing. While many university advising programs focus on students in G11 and G12, at LAS we know that it is important for younger students to work with the platforms that will prepare them for their university application process, and that they understand how their current studies and work ethic impacts their futures.
In November, our grade 9 students engaged in MaiaLearning’s Personality Assessment, which is a tool designed to help them uncover how they perceive the world and make decisions. This assessment delves into four fundamental aspects of their personality, indicating their position on a scale between two preferences. This assessment gives students a fundamental understanding of their learning styles and will ultimately help them in the future when working in groups, making decisions, and choosing a career.
The Personality Assessment summary encompasses several key sections, including:
- Personality Scales
- Learning Activities and Environment
- Communication Insights
- Interpersonal Recommendations
- Career Options
Grade 10 students engage with MaiaLearning’s Career Interest Profilers and Work Values Assessments. The Interest Profiler, a tool rooted in Holland's theory of personality types, categorizes careers into Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional types, aligning with students' top three personality traits. This builds on their work in grade 9 and provides information that they can apply to their career choices. Upon completion, students receive a comprehensive summary and have the opportunity to explore a curated list of careers matching their Interest Profile. This really enriches our students’ university advising process, as it suggests careers they may not be aware of and industries they had not previously considered.
Early in the new year, our grade 10 students will embark on the Morrisby Assessment. This comprehensive career and interest inventory test will further guide them as they prepare for next year's crucial course selection. At LAS, we believe that understanding personality types can positively influence course selections. We know they will find it incredibly useful as they gain a deeper understanding of their interests, values, and potential career paths.
In preparation for life after LAS, it is important for grade 9 and 10 students to form good academic habits, start to understand their personality types and how that applies to their studies, and begin to think about course selections and career options.
