LAS Shines at the Model United Nations Conference in Lausanne

Last week, a group of our students attended the Model United Nations (MUN) Conference at the International School of Lausanne (ISL). The event was packed with debate, diplomacy, and global engagement. Our students had a fantastic time gaining new knowledge and networking with fellow delegates from other schools. At LAS, we encourage our students to develop into global citizens, and events like these allow them to improve their confidence, research, and social skills.

MUN is a highly interactive simulation where students take on the role of delegates representing different countries. Together, they work to solve real-world issues through debate, negotiation, and research. It provides a unique platform for students to develop skills such as public speaking, persuasive argument building, and diplomatic problem-solving. The students enjoyed researching the topics, learning about country positions, and finding common ground with peers from all over the world.

The conference in Lausanne brought together students from various international schools, making it a great opportunity for our students to interact with peers from diverse cultural backgrounds. This diversity made the debates even more interesting, allowing students to gain new perspectives on global issues while refining their communication and collaboration skills.

Sara ‘26, who took part in the event, reflected on the day:

“On Saturday, September 21st, LAS brought a delegation of 8 students to attend the second International School of Lausanne Model United Nations (ISLMUN). The students were able to discuss a wide variety of global issues in different committees of the United Nations, from debating the delivery of aid in South Sudan at the Human Rights Council to looking into competing territorial claims between Armenia & Azerbaijan on the International Court of Justice. Notably, four students participated in the Security Council, which deliberated over the Yemen Conflict. LAS delegates represented several significant Arab states, with the delegate of Saudi Arabia winning the Best Delegate award. Overall, ISLMUN was a day of fruitful debating, resolution drafting, and socializing that all students thoroughly enjoyed.”

The MUN Conference in Lausanne was an invaluable experience for our students, offering them the opportunity to develop academically and personally. We are so proud of how they represented the school, and we look forward to seeing them apply and develop these skills in future conferences!
