LAS Celebrates Earth Day and Eco-Schools Certification!

Last week, LAS came together as a community to celebrate Earth Day with a fun series of events and a significant achievement in our sustainability journey: we have officially been recognized as an Eco-School!

Our Eco Club and Student Council have been working hard throughout the year to promote sustainable habits on our campus. With a special focus on UN Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, students led awareness campaigns and promoted reusable water bottles to make use of the water refill stations that have been installed across campus this year. This long-term project not only reduced our reliance on single-use plastics but also showed what our amazing students can achieve with hard work and determination!

Last week, LAS celebrated Earth Day with a full afternoon of activities. An all-school assembly allowed students to reflect on this year’s sustainability work, and we officially received our Green Flag from Eco-Schools Switzerland. We also had the opportunity to hear from the Eco Club and Student Council as they announced the new sustainability focus for next school year: SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being and SDG 13: Climate Action.

This week, students and faculty families took part in hands-on Earth Day activities of their choosing. This included planting, litter picking, nature walks, and more! Afterwards, we celebrated Earth Day with a Farm-to-Table BBQ on the Savoy terrace. The Farm-to-Table movement promotes serving local food from nearby farms. This means the food is fresher, contains fewer preservatives, supports the local economy, and reduces transportation emissions. It was fantastic to eat such fresh food and celebrate Earth Day together as a community!

One of the activities during Earth Day was our tree planting event, where students and faculty planted 18 trees and 24 shrubs, rebuilt vegetable boxes, and planted seeds and plantlets grown by the Gardening Club. For many students, it was their first time using a drill, planting something in the ground, and fully connecting with the earth beneath their feet. It was a fantastic reminder that we all depend on the planet to feed and sustain us!

We’re also proud to announce that our POW (Protect Our Winters) club raised over CHF 610 for climate activism in Switzerland through our community raffle. Thank you to many local businesses and residents for donating generous prizes for the raffle!

We had a fantastic Earth Day celebration, and we are beyond pleased that we have managed to achieve our Eco-Schools certification! Thank you to everyone involved, and we hope students learned about the importance of sustainability and the environment. Every day is Earth Day, and this is our only planet, so let’s continue to care for it!
