World-Class Location, World-Class Athletes: LAS Freestyle and Freeride Programs Shine

An Exceptional Location for Alpine Sports

Leysin, Switzerland is not just a breathtaking place to live and learn—it is a world-class destination for Alpine sport. Nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps, LAS students enjoy a rare and remarkable advantage: a backyard that doubles as one of the most spectacular training and competition environments in the world. World-class pistes, challenging off-piste terrain, a professional snow park, and even an airbag right in the village make Leysin the perfect place to develop as an Alpine athlete.

Many of our students arrive at LAS with a spirit of adventure already burning, and for those who don't, our stunning mountain surroundings have a way of igniting one. Beyond traditional skiing and snowboarding, LAS offers students the opportunity to pursue freeride, navigating dramatic off-piste terrain across natural mountain landscapes, and freestyle, where athletes master acrobatic tricks such as 360-degree spins, flips, and grabs in a groomed snow park. Both disciplines demand serious athletic ability, mental discipline, and a deep commitment to improvement.

Our freestyle and freeride programs are relatively new to LAS, but the progress and success already on display is nothing short of extraordinary. Through these programs, student athletes are developing far more than technical skills on the snow. They are learning the value of hard work, perseverance, and resilience—qualities that will serve them long after they leave the mountain. With competitions taking place across Switzerland, students also have the opportunity to travel, connect with peers from other schools, and grow as both athletes and individuals.

This season, LAS had the privilege of hosting two competitions right here on our home mountain, and our athletes rose to the occasion in spectacular fashion.

MLS Freeride Competition

Under clear blue skies, LAS hosted the 2nd annual MLS Freeride Competition under the stunning Tête d'Aï here in Leysin. Over 80 athletes from six nearby schools competed, showcasing their best line choices, 360s, shiftys, and grabs across the mountain terrain. It was a wonderful day of competition, and LAS made an outstanding showing with multiple students earning podium finishes:

Gaspard '28 — 1st place, Under 16 Ski Men
Thomas '27 — 1st place, Under 18 Ski Men
Samantha '26 — 1st place, Under 18 Ski Women
Nika '26 — 2nd place, Under 18 Ski Women
Isaiah '26 — 3rd place, Under 18 Ski Men

MLS Freestyle Competition

LAS followed up by hosting the MLS Freestyle Competition, bringing together 73 competitors from nine regional schools for a full day of slopestyle and big air competition under brilliant sunshine. The format featured two slopestyle runs in the morning, followed by a high-energy big air event in the afternoon. A highlight of the day was its inclusivity—athletes of all levels were able to choose features suited to their ability, from smaller jumps for newer competitors to the largest features for the most experienced riders. The progression on display throughout the day was remarkable, with athletes stomping tricks ranging from their very first 360 all the way to a double 1080. Backflips, front flips, 540s, 720s, and 900s were all landed, and the energy in the park was electric from start to finish.

LAS athletes delivered an outstanding collective performance, earning podium finishes across nearly every category:

Gaspard '28 — 1st place, Slopestyle and Big Air, Under 18 Ski Men
Luca '29 — 1st place, Big Air, Under 16 Ski Men
Kaiser '29 — 1st place, Big Air Snowboard Men's Open; 2nd place, Snowboard Slopestyle
Samantha '26 — 2nd place, Women's Open Slopestyle; Joint 3rd, Big Air Women's Open
Elena '29 and Mary '27 — Joint 3rd, Big Air Women's Open
Antonio '26 — Joint 3rd, Big Air Under 18 Ski Men
Daniel '28 — 4th place, Snowboard Slopestyle Under 16 Men; 2nd place, Big Air Snowboard Men's Open

More Than Sport

The competitions showcased the incredible depth of talent within our Freestyle and Freeride programs, and we could not be more proud of everything our athletes achieved. Beyond the podium finishes, what inspires us most is the personal growth we witness in these students every day. These sports offer a unique kind of structure and challenge that builds discipline, focus, and resilience, qualities that carry over into the classroom and every other area of their lives.

Both events were true LAS community occasions, bringing together students, staff, and families to celebrate athletic excellence in one of the most breathtaking settings imaginable. That our students get to train, compete, and grow in this environment is something we never take for granted. The talent, determination, and heart we see in these young athletes is genuinely inspiring, and with programs this young already achieving so much, we cannot wait to see what comes next!
