Exploring the World of Higher Education at the LAS University Fair

Last week, LAS hosted its annual University Fair, welcoming over 70 universities from around the world to campus. The event provided an invaluable opportunity for students in grades 10 and 11 to explore their higher education options and begin thinking ahead to life after Leysin. Having so many universities gathered in one place allowed students to ask questions directly to representatives and gain a clear understanding of the diverse array of options available to them after graduation. 

Speaking face-to-face with university staff is the next best thing to visiting campuses in person, giving students a window into the culture and feel of each institution. One of the most crucial aspects of selecting a college or university is finding the 'right fit'. That can be challenging without personally visiting campuses. While online research is helpful, it fails to provide the tangible experience of being there. Events like the University Fair help bridge that gap.

Universities from the UK and the US were well represented at the university fair! Our university advisors were delighted to see students asking insightful questions and taking the first step toward curating a balanced, well-researched list of potential universities. A balanced university list provides opportunities to find institutions that truly match the student's preferences for campus culture, size, location, and extracurricular activities. Perhaps most importantly, the fair exposed students to options they may have yet to consider. Students were able to discover options that perfectly fit their goals but weren't initially on their radar.

LAS urges students to tour campuses of interest virtually or physically, speak with current students, and carefully consider personal preferences to ensure the best possible fit. Attending the University Fair was a great start for students, but there's more work ahead to create an ideal university list! The fair also allowed students to get practical tips directly from admissions officers on crafting a standout application and avoiding common mistakes. Students learned a lot about topics such as subject requirements, exam preparation, and how to secure admission to universities abroad.

The LAS University Fair was a positive experience that set students up for success in the college admissions process. By connecting with a vast array of institutions and gaining insider knowledge, students are now well-equipped to identify their best-fit universities. As they move forward crafting applications, visiting campuses, and finalizing college lists, the invaluable insights from the fair will act as a foundation for them to work from.
