Exploring Language and Culture in Thonon and Yvoire

This week, LAS French students crossed the border into France for a day of language immersion, cultural experiences, and hands-on learning. This annual spring trip to Thonon-les-Bains and Yvoire is an excellent way for students to become more confident in their language skills and learn in authentic settings!

The French SL1 class embraced the role of tour guides for the day. Working in small groups, students explored the beautiful lakeside town of Thonon-les-Bains, presenting cultural knowledge and historical facts in French while on location. Their work was documented in short 8-10 minute videos, where they showcased their vocabulary, teamwork, and understanding of the region. It was a creative and interactive way to engage with the language experientially and beyond the classroom!

Meanwhile, the French HL1 class brought literature to life. Drawing inspiration from the short story collection Je voudrais que quelqu’un m’attende quelque part, students created imaginative sequels or re-enactments of their chosen stories, setting the scenes in various spots throughout Thonon. These creative pieces were captured in short 10-12 minute films, allowing them to show their linguistic skills and their grasp of character development, theme, and narrative style.

The group then travelled to Yvoire, a nearby medieval village positioned on the shores of Lac Léman. In Yvoire, students spent the afternoon wandering through cobbled streets, viewing stone buildings and floral displays, and discovering the aspects that have made the town one of the most beautiful in France.

Students had a wonderful time exploring this beautiful part of Europe. We are so lucky to have so many places in Europe on our doorstep, and our students gained a lot from culturally and linguistically immersing themselves. We are proud of our students for pushing themselves out of their comfort zones and striving to improve their language skills!
