The IB Collaborative Science Project Day brings Grade 11 science students together for an immersive experience, connecting scientific learning to real-world challenges. This day goes beyond traditional science education, fostering critical thinking, teamwork, and a sense of responsibility for global issues.
Students engage with 'Sustainability Alive', a dynamic simulation provided by Kudizi, Educators for a Hopeful World, where they take on decision-making roles to balance business goals with sustainable development objectives. This immersive experience makes sustainability come alive in a vibrant and urgent way, building an understanding of critical issues like poverty and climate change and fostering a sense of responsibility toward these global challenges. They also participate in role-play scenarios, including disaster response exercises from the “Wheel of Chance” events, that encourage collaboration and draw out the role of the application of interdisciplinary science under pressure.
Experiential learning is central to our academic approach at LAS, inspiring students to see science as a powerful driver of positive change. Through hands-on activities in the simulation, students experience how scientific disciplines—biology, chemistry, environmental science, physics, and computer science—intersect and complement each other in addressing complex global issues. An interdisciplinary approach allows students to see firsthand how combining insights and methods from multiple fields fuels innovative solutions to interconnected challenges like climate change, public health, and sustainable resource management.
Reflection is a key part of the day, encouraging students to consider how science can support sustainable development and social change. They continue to conduct personal research on innovations in society that tackle sustainability, presenting their findings at the end of November. Thanks to Kudizi for facilitating this day and to our science department for organizing such a valuable experience for the students!
