Creativity and Innovation at LAS: Unlocking Student Potential

At Leysin American School, creativity and innovation are key components of our academic and extracurricular programming, helping prepare students for a future they can design themselves! The arts provide a vital space for students to think outside the box, express their unique perspectives, and connect with their peers. Our arts program, state-of-the-art facilities, and beautiful Alpine surroundings promote student development, inspiration, and creative potential.

LAS offers a wide range of courses in visual arts, theater, music, and design from the middle school and preparatory years to the diploma years. Students can explore their interests through digital arts, theater arts, and creative music classes, building a strong foundation for further studies. Whether designing innovative digital projects or mastering performance techniques, our students build essential skills beyond just the classroom.

Creativity thrives when students are given hands-on experience, and LAS ensures students have plenty of opportunities to engage in artistic activities. Students participate in musical theater productions, plays, and art exhibitions each year, showcasing their talents to the school community. These events allow students to develop their skills, receive constructive feedback, and gain confidence in presenting their work to audiences.

In addition to the creative arts, students can develop their creative skills through design too! The LAS Innovation Lab is a vibrant space where students engage in hands-on learning through diverse projects that spark creativity and innovation. Using advanced tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, and digital design software, students develop practical skills, problem-solving abilities, and an understanding of modern technologies. The lab equips students to become thoughtful, future-ready makers and innovators by blending creativity, sustainability, and technical expertise.

Beyond the classroom, LAS offers various extracurricular activities for budding creatives. Students can join the choir, participate in the fall play or spring musicals, participate in regular music concerts and art exhibitions, and try new skills like robotics and Dungeons and Dragons. Other after-school activities include baking club, knitting, pottery, yearbook design, and Dance. These opportunities allow students to immerse themselves in creative pursuits, fostering personal growth and connection to the school community. Students may have never tried many of these activities, so allowing them to develop new skills means they can thrive in an encouraging and creative environment!

Engaging in creativity at LAS is about developing skills, building resilience, and giving students a strong sense of self. Creative activities help students discover their strengths, express their identities, and connect with others more deeply. Our students continually amaze us with their unique insights and endless originality, whether in the art studio, on stage, or in the innovation lab!
