The Big Program at LAS: Mentorship, Friendship, and Belonging

At Leysin American School, community is the foundation of our education, and we build it with great care. One of the most meaningful ways we do this is through the Big Program, a mentoring initiative that pairs older students with our grade 7, 8 and 9 "Littles." These student mentors, known as "Bigs," act as supportive older siblings throughout the year, helping younger students feel welcomed and connected as they navigate life at LAS.

Our Bigs put a lot of thought and effort into their role. They check in with their Littles regularly, stay available by phone or email when guidance is needed, and model positivity, leadership and kindness in every interaction. Whether it's sharing a meal in the cafeteria, walking into town together, organizing a study session, or meeting up for a weekend hike, Bigs create moments that help their Littles settle in, grow in confidence and feel part of something larger. They also come together for group activities that strengthen the network of friendships forming across grades.

This year, the friendly energy among the Bigs and Littles was palpable as soon as they were paired up. After initial introductions, the students took a short hike to Prafandaz, where they played outdoor games, made s'mores over a bonfire, and enjoyed a gorgeous sunset over Lake Geneva, snapping plenty of selfies along the way. With so much laughter, easy conversation, and active fun throughout the evening, it was obvious that the pairings of Bigs and Littles were already a huge success.

With more events planned throughout the year, the Big Program continues to enrich our school culture by helping Littles feel supported and helping Bigs develop leadership skills, empathy and a sense of responsibility. It's yet another way LAS ensures every student feels seen, connected, and truly at home.
