A Plan for Meaningful Success: the University Advising Process at LAS

At Leysin American School, our University Advising program supports students at every stage of their academic journey. From building self-awareness in Grade 9 to navigating university applications in Grade 12, our advisors work closely with each student to ensure they leave LAS equipped with the self-knowledge, confidence, and tools to take their next steps with clarity and purpose. Here's what each grade is working on right now.

Grade 9: Discovering Your Character Strengths
Recently, Rich Modica, Director of University Advising, met with Grade 9 students to introduce them to the VIA Character Strengths Assessment. This research-backed tool helps students identify their unique profile across 24 character strengths, from creativity and curiosity to leadership and perseverance.

Following the assessment, each student received a personalized report highlighting their individual strengths. More than just a personality exercise, this is the first step in helping students understand who they are, how they learn, and what kind of future they want to build. By knowing their strengths early, students are better equipped to navigate both their academic and personal journeys with confidence and intention.

Grade 10: Academic Advising
Grade 10 students, your academic advising sessions are just around the corner. This is a great opportunity to reflect on your course choices, set goals for the years ahead, and ensure your academic path is aligned with your interests and ambitions. More details can be found here.

Grade 11: Start Thinking About University Visits This Summer
Summer is the perfect time to explore potential universities. Visiting a campus can make all the difference, helping a university shift from a name on a list to a place you can genuinely picture yourself. If you're planning summer travel, consider building in a campus visit or two. Find out why university visits matter here.

Grade 12: Combatting Senioritis
You're nearly there, but the final stretch matters. Senioritis is real, and it can have real consequences. Staying engaged, keeping grades strong, and finishing the year with the same commitment you started with is essential. Your future university will be watching. For tips on staying motivated through to graduation, read our guide here.
