Multimedia Class Projects Portray Life at LAS

In Multimedia Art class at LAS, students explore various methods of self expression using digital media. The class focus is on using Adobe Photoshop for still images and Apple iMovie for their initial digital videos. The work featured here represents students’ first efforts at creating a “Digital Story” using audio and video components.

LAS Students and Faculty Visit CERN

LINAC Injector

A group of science enthusiasts traveled to CERN (Center for European Nuclear Research) in Geneva on Jan. 30 to see the world’s largest and most complex instruments used to study our universe. Five faculty members and 30 students from different grades and science classes traveled to the research center. They got a first-hand look at the tools that aid scientists in unlocking the mysteries of the universe. LAS Physical Science Teacher, Carl Gehriger said the trip was driven by “pure enthusiasm and pure curiosity about our universe.”

School’s Out for Ski Day!

Students received great news during their first period classes…

Faculty announced a SKI DAY to take advantage of the powder and favorable conditions on the mountain. Students exchanged their books for snow gear and hit the slopes in sunny Leysin.

Ski days are awarded when the greater school community is meeting expectations, skiing conditions are favorable, and there is no inconvenience to institutional functioning.

Support Students in Snowshoe Challenge for Nepal Service Trip

A group of five LAS students and two teachers will snowshoe up the Berneuse on February 25th to raise money for a service trip to Nepal. The 6kms trek will begin in Leysin Village (1268m) and end at the summit of La Bernuese (2048m), aiming to simulate the physical challenge and mandatory team work facing them this spring.  The Berneuse Snowshoe Challenge is a major event in a series of fundraisers for the 2010 “Nepal Shelter for Life Project.”

During the trip students will provide the poor village of Mugu with clean energy to curb the young mortality rate and to directly better the lives of villagers by installing smokeless stoves …

IB Students Go Green!

Model United Nations and IB Geography classes at the Belle Epoque teamed up for a five-day simulation of a conference to examine the human impact on Ecosystems while searching for more sustainable development.

Students were assigned the role of a “character” and were challenged to adopt their positions on the issues of development in the Amazonian Basin. Students wrote press releases, gave speeches and held press conferences in addition to writing official position and response papers.

Using the Copenhagen Climate talks as an example, students stated their character’s position on Rainforest Deforestation, what the consequence would be if it stopped, alternatives to the process and who their natural allies would be …
